What is HE Connected Studio 2013/14?
HE Connected Studio is an opportunity for postgraduate (taught and research) students and early-mid career researchers to become engaged with the BBC Wales/S4C flagship innovation programme, Connected Studio.
Connected Studio is a new approach to delivering innovation across BBC Future Media, with the aim to develop ideas for innovative features and formats. The goal is to add a range of new functions, features or formats across online services, streamlining audience experience and optimising BBC digital media products for the future. HE Connected Studio is a new initiative in partnership with BBC Wales/S4C, which is being piloted in 2013/14 to provide participants with the experiences of the Connected Studio format, as well as the opportunity to work with digital agencies, technology start-ups, individual designers and developers (including BBC staff) who are successful in the larger industry BBC Connected Studio.
Participants who are selected to progress after the initial HE Connected Studio events will be offered a place to link with successful business collaborations that are working with BBC Wales/S4C to deliver innovative projects that may be commissioned in 2014.

The First one
The first HE Connected Studio was on the theme of Music. It brought together 35 postgraduate students and early-mid career academics to learn about explore how they can work together to develop a new and vibrant research agenda in collaboration with BBC Wales, S4C and Creative Businesses.
Who can apply?
Participants will be postgraduate students or early career academic researchers, and must be associated with one of the Welsh Higher Education Institutions (Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Cardiff Metropolitan, Glyndwr, South Wales, Swansea, Swansea Metropolitan, and University of Wales Trinity Saint David)
Each University in Wales has a HE Connected Studio contact, who will identify and nominate suitable staff members and postgraduates to participate in Connected Studio.
Academic staff participants will be welcomed at the early-mid stages of their research/business career. This is to allow less experienced researchers to benefit from the programme, and to share ideas and develop future collaborations. For academic applicants we are defining early-mid career as within 10 years of completion of PhD or first permanent academic appointment.
Academic nominees will be expected to be of post-doctoral standing or have equivalent research /industry experience.
Applicants who have completed a PhD awaiting examination will be considered but will have to demonstrate that they fit the definition of an active academic researcher.

HE Connected Studio 1-day events will take place, involving workshops and challenges will be led by BBC staff, innovative academics and entrepreneurs in the creative industries. These will be designed to give participants an experience of participating in a Connected Studio event.
Participants will develop knowledge, network contacts and potential areas for collaborative working. There will be a focus on developing skills for interacting and implications of working with businesses and academics, through the presentation of case studies and the direct involvement of businesses in the Creative Crucible.
What will happen afterwards?
Following HE Connected Studio creative days, some participants will be invited to work with digital agencies, technology start-ups, individual designers and developers (including BBC staff) who are successful in the full BBC Connected Studio Industry events.
For academic researchers, it is expected that the Strategic Insight Programme (SIP) will provide an opportunity for academics to develop and continue their collaborations with creative businesses and BBC Wales/S4C.
What are the benefits to Universities?
Being selected for this programme will benefit your University as well as you. HE Connected Studio will help you to develop your skills of creativity and innovation and you will benefit from your expanded network within the research community.
How much does it cost?
Any travel and accommodation costs involved with attending HE Connected Studio are expected to be met by the participant’s University. Costs on the day, including catering, will be provided by CEWN through our funding from the AHRC.

The environment will encourage free and open-minded thinking, networking and collaboration. Full details of the venue, how to get there and the accommodation arrangements will be sent to participants two weeks before the event.
How much time do I need to commit if I am selected to be one of the 10 going forward to work with companies?
You will need to attend the Industry Connected Studio day, the two-day build and you will be given the option to apply to collaborate with a UK-based digital production company for additional hours over the months that follow.
What is the definition of ‘creative’?
We are interested in applicants who are able to demonstrate a link between their work and the creative disciplines. We are not defining the disciplines that should be represented at HE Connected Studio; rather we are asking potential participants to indicate how their expertise and ideas could meet the needs of the brief.
Expertise is welcomed from a very broad range of disciplines, and applicants should not feel limited by conventional perceptions: our approach recognises the benefits of bringing people together who would not normally interact.
We actively encourage people to apply that are experts in their own research areas but wish to apply it to the brief alongside other creative disciplines.
The conventional DCMS definition recognises twelve creative sectors. They are:
We also welcome (and encourage) nominations of researchers in other arts and humanities disciplines (e.g. History, English) as well as applicants from engineering and technological backgrounds who may be able to apply their knowledge and expertise to creative outcomes.
How will the nomination process work?
Nominations to attend will be made by lead representatives of each University in Wales.
If HE Connected Studio is over-subscribed, nominations will be considered by a selection panel consisting of CEWN steering group members in order to ensure a mix of disciplines and experience. Overall, the panel will seek to ensure that a balance of expertise is present at the HE Connected Studio.
