NEWS: Knowledge Exchange events 2014 announced
Our events promote collaborative knowledge exchange between academics and businesses in the creative industries, supporting development of imaginative projects. Each exchange event will help participants to produce project plans eligible for £10,000 AHRC development funds that have been allocated to each event.
in 2014 we will be holding three knowledge exchange events as part of the Creative Capacity, spread across Wales. The exchange events will be utilised to develop collaborative project ideas. The events typically involved 30 individuals with a 50:50 split between academia and external stakeholders.
We will be posting further detail about the events and locations during Autumn 2013. Please check again soon or join our mailing list to get the most up-to-date information.
In 2014 we are hoping to offer satellite provision and webinar services to help reduce the need to travel to event destinations.

FAQ
What will happen at the events?
The exchange events will use open space methodology to develop collaborative project ideas. The events will typically involve 30 individuals with a 50:50 split between academia and external stakeholders. Each event will :
- Facilitate knowledge exchange between participants
- Create the conditions for both large and small-group interactions
- Provide the framework for ideas creation and development that will lead to the creation of project proposals.
The unique partnership between the AHRC and A4B will bring extra funding to the Creative Capacity, with A4B funding exchange events that will produce project plans eligible for £10,000 AHRC development funds that have been allocated to each event. The project plans will not be completed by the end of each event but within a deadline expected to be within 3-4 weeks of the event.
Proposals could have a number of formats including (but not limited to) proof of concept, small pilot projects, equipment grants, travel support, and projects that will help to facilitate an application for external funding for research. We particularly encourage collaborative, multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary knowledge exchange activities. For each funding application, we expect a collaboration between at least one academic partner and one business partner.
Why should I apply to attend?
Creative Capacity will help you to engage with a number of like-minded, innovative researchers and business. You will be able to develop a network of peers within the research and business community, fueling potential interdisciplinary working. By attending you will also be eligible to apply for a share of the £10,000 development funding available at each workshop.
Applications will be assessed and, should an event be over-subscribed, a selection of applicants that fit best with the theme will be invited to attend. Please use the application form at the top of this page to apply.
How are you defining creativity?
The purpose of the Creative Capacity is to focus on collaborative knowledge exchange between academics and businesses in the creative industries, supporting development of imaginative projects. We are interested in applicants who are able to demonstrate a link between their work and the creative disciplines. We are not defining the disciplines that should be represented at the Creative Capacity; rather we are asking potential participants to indicate how their expertise and ideas could interact positively with other attendees. Expertise is welcomed from a very broad range of disciplines, and applicants should not feel limited by conventional perceptions: our approach recognises the benefits of bringing people together who would not normally interact. We actively encourage people to apply that are experts in their own research areas but wish to apply it alongside other creative disciplines.
Who can apply?
Participants must work either:
- At one of the Welsh Higher Education Institutions (South Wales, Cardiff, Cardiff Metropolitan, Swansea, Glyndwr, Bangor, Aberystwyth, University of Wales Trinity Saint David)
- In research and development in business, industry or the public sector. Preference will be given to businesses in EU convergence areas within Wales.
Academic applicants will be expected to be of post-doctoral standing or have equivalent research/industry experience. Applicants who have completed a PhD awaiting examination will be considered but will have to demonstrate that they fit the definition of an active academic researcher.
How much does it cost?
Each knowledge exchange event is free to attend. Creative Capacity is supported by A4B (Academic Expertise For Business), a six year programme of support funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and European Structural Funds which provides a portfolio of funding support for knowledge transfer from academia to business.
A4B will cover the costs of the day, including food and but will not be able to cover travel expenses or replacement cover for attendees.
I can't attend an event. Am I able to participate online?
We believe that the best ideas come from personal interactions and coversations that happen face-to-face. However, we realise that travel can be difficult so for 2014 our plan is to hold satellite provision/webinar services if this can be organised satisfactorily. We are in discussion with Wales Video Network regarding use of videoconferencing facilities for this purpose. Please check back for details,.
