On Friday 21st of November the Employing Media in our Public Work took place at the Glamorgan Conference Centre - Treforest Campus, University of South Wales. Over 30 delegates from across local government, charities, Universities and creative media gathered to learn about best practice and ways of collaborating to use media to reach new audiences. The day involved networking opportunities and a chance to hear about projects which currently engage creative media in their communications and engagement plans.
The programme consisted of a morning session of presentations, an early afternoon workshop and a later afternoon showcase. During the morning session, chaired by Ceri Thomas (Regional Collaboration Fund Manager - Welsh Government), the delegates got the chance through a series of presentations to discover how media can be used to support change and good practice. The early afternoon session, opened by Karen Lewis (Co Director, George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling- University of South Wales), discussed the power of storytelling and engaged participants in two 30 minute workshops about story capturing on film and convincing stories for inspiring change. During the late afternoon session six recently-funded projects from the Creative Exchange Wales Network programme presented their progress to a panel of BBC (Ian Tweedale), Welsh Local Government Association (Clover Rodrigues) and Crowdfunding experts (Elio Assuncao) looking for innovative practice and advice on how to make their work more effective. Clover Rodrigues (Welsh Local Government Association) said “Full, diverse, interesting day – really enjoyable” On September 4th, 20 creative practitioners gathered to look at their business plan in an intensive workshop led by consultant Erica Wolfe Murray, as part of the CEWN project's support of the media sector in Wales.
Erica Wolfe Murrary, Lola Media, said: "There are so many opportunities for creative companies these days, that getting to grips with some of the basic business planning skills is critical. Much better to do it through a range of easy-to-use diagrams you can put on the walls than endless spreadsheets and word docs that you never look at. The group had tons of new things fired at them over the day, doing brilliantly to assimilate them all to see which could help them and how." Rebecca Hardy, Director/Writer/Filmmaker said: "Thanks again for Erica's time, talent and knowledge on the day. The ideas covered and business development tools shared are invaluable to me and I’m already thinking about plastering my business plan on the wall and drawing bulls eyes and re-evaluating the content I have to help me build a better business and also a stronger offer." "Thank you for such a creativity stimulating day." said Eryl Philips of Rondo. Take a look at the photos from the day here: Frank Boyd (TSB/CIKTN) hosted CEWN’s first Knowledge exchange event of 2014 on 29th Jan at ATRiuM. The event promoted collaborative knowledge exchange between academics and businesses in the creative industries, supporting development of imaginative projects. Each exchange event helps participants to produce project plans eligible for £10,000 AHRC development funds that have been allocated to each event.
26 people attended, from a breadth of interested sectors and academic disciplines, who were able to work together on common concepts in a way that they had not been able to do previously. From the business sector attendees included healthcare providers, digital agencies, technology start-ups and individual designers and developers who want to submit and develop ideas for innovative projects. Academics also came from a range of disciplines including music, art, design, psychology and healthcare. The event asked some key questions to inspire creative responses to health-related issues: - What are benefits of the Creative Industries for wellbeing in an ageing population? - What are the health opportunities of some creative industries, or in the design of creative products? Attendees discussed and found creative and technological approaches to wellbeing, supporting areas as chronic disease management, physical wellbeing, and mental health. Ageing and Health in particular are key innovative sectors for the Creative Industries, and provided rich opportunities for digital innovation in the health sector. Outcomes from the day include an opportunity for attendees to collaborate to bid for pilot project money from a £10,000 fund provided by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Proposals could have a number of formats including (but not limited to) proof of concept, small pilot projects, equipment grants, travel support, and projects that will help to facilitate an application for external funding for research. We will particularly encourage collaborative, multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary knowledge exchange activities. Photos of the event can be seen on the CEWN facebook site https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.691456394208973.1073741829.432007173487231&&uploaded=28 It has been a busy but rewarding few months here at CEWN. We’ve had some great events, and helped fund some really interesting and innovative projects. See 'our projects' for an overview of the great work that they're doing.
CEWN has now received funding from September 2013- Dec 2014. CEWN will be delivering 3 more Knowledge Exchange events this year. We'll be announcing details soon. We'll also be partnering with the BBC/S4C to deliver a HE Connected Studio this Autumn. Longer-term, we're aiming to develop the basis for a Knowledge Exchange Hub for the Creative Industries in Wales. The team- Alongside Hamish Fyfe and Richard Bromiley, we will now be joined by two development managers who will take the lead on a number of key work packages for CEWN. We will announce further details soon. The EPSRC have opened a competition for two critical pieces of foundational research:
1. The delivery of a ‘systematic literature review‘ of Business Models with the aim of providing insights into the differences between Business Models, Economic Models, and Operational Models and their link to business strategy. 2. The delivery of a ‘case study’ illustrating the impact of digital technology on a sector or sub sector of the economy. Deadline is 13th July 2012! http://nemodenetwork.wordpress.com/ CEWN began its work on June 25th with a steering group meeting. Some great ideas from members that will make an appearance as the project gets going at full speed.
